The repair bands set against what replacing a built-in actually costs, and where the line between the two falls. Source: https://jaxwolfco.com/repair-or-replace/ ## The short answer Half of the cheapest built-in replacement on our own table is $2,600. The dearest single job in the repair book is control board or touch panel at $460–$1,070 fitted — about 21 per cent of that replacement. On built-in cooking equipment the fifty per cent rule almost never fires on one fault, which is why the honest comparison is the part against the opening rather than the part against nothing. ## What the work costs Diagnostic: $80, flat, credited toward the repair once the work is approved. | What gets replaced | Parts and labour | | --- | --- | | Igniter or spark module replacement | $200–$510 | | Burner valve or orifice service | $210–$690 | | Oven thermostat or temperature sensor | $190–$530 | | Convection fan or motor | $250–$680 | | Control board or touch panel | $460–$1,070 | | Door hinge, glass or seal | $180–$720 | Ranges, not quotes. The firm figure is written down after the fault is found. ### Replacing the appliance instead | Replacement | Appliance only, before delivery or installation | | --- | --- | | Wall oven or built-in oven, the usual repair-or-replace comparison | $5,200–$10,500 | | Dual-fuel or gas range, 36 inch and up | $8,500–$16,500 | ## When the repair is clearly the better money The everyday work — ignition, sensing, doors, fans — starts at $180 on the table above, and all of it lives inside a fraction of what filling the same opening costs. The igniter or spark module replacement band, $200–$510, on a fifteen-year-old range is not a judgement call. A single expensive part on an otherwise sound appliance is the same answer: one control board or touch panel against a replacement that starts around $5,200 and runs to $16,500 for a wide range is not a close question. ## When it is a judgement call Several dear jobs on one visit. The three heaviest bands in the book — burner valve or orifice service, door hinge, glass or seal, control board or touch panel — total $2,480, about 48 per cent of the cheapest replacement. That is the first arrangement of parts that gets near the line, and there the decision turns on the rest of the machine: the cavity, the seals, the hinges, corrosion on the terminals, and whether the unit has been running in too tight an opening since it went in. ## When it is not worth it - The component has been discontinued. That is not a repair at any price, and no band in the table applies to it. The part number is checked against supply before a quote, not after. - The appliance is failing in several places at once. One dead component on a sound machine is a repair; four marginal ones is the appliance saying something. - The unit is still inside the coverage it came with. Use that instead — an independent repair may cost you the cover. ## What the $80 settles first Flat $80 diagnostic covering the visit and the full diagnostic sequence, credited toward the repair once you approve the work. You get a written estimate before any part is ordered or any labour is billed. The fault, the part number and the lead time on that part are all in writing before anything is committed. After the work: 90 days on labour, 365 days on parts, genuine OEM only. ## The money questions, answered ### Is it worth fixing, or should the appliance be replaced? Set the quote beside what the opening costs to fill. The dearest single job on our book tops out at $1,070; the cheapest built-in replacement starts around $5,200 for the appliance alone, before delivery, installation or the cabinetry a different-sized unit forces. One failed part is almost always the better money. ### What is the 50 percent rule for appliance repair? The rule of thumb says walk away once a repair passes half the cost of replacing the machine. Half of the cheapest replacement on our own table is $2,600, and no single band in the book comes near it. On built-in cooking equipment that rule almost never fires on one fault. ### How much do you charge per hour? Nothing by the hour. The visit is a flat $80 diagnostic covering the trip and the whole test sequence, credited against the repair once you approve it. The work itself is quoted as a band for the job, parts and labour together, so a careful diagnosis never costs you more than a lucky one. ### What does the diagnostic fee actually buy? $80, flat: the trip out, the full diagnostic sequence, and a written estimate carrying the part number before anything is ordered. It comes off the total the moment you approve the work, so the diagnosis is never a separate bill sitting on top of the repair. ### Which part is the expensive one to replace? The electronics, every time. A control board or touch panel runs $460–$1,070 fitted — ahead of any burner, element or door job on the book. It is also the part most often taken out by a supply event rather than by wear, which is why we test the supply before quoting one. ### How much does it cost to repair a stovetop burner? Depends which half of it failed. Ignition work — igniter or spark module replacement — runs $200–$510. Gas-side work, burner valve or orifice service, runs $210–$690. A port packed with an old boil-over is often cleared during the diagnostic, and then the visit fee is the whole bill. ### What does an oven that will not heat cost to put right? Most come back to the oven thermostat or temperature sensor band, $190–$530 fitted, because a probe that has drifted high stops the board calling for heat at all. Where the control itself is dead instead, the control board or touch panel band applies at $460–$1,070. The diagnostic settles which of the two it is. ### Is a twenty-year-old built-in worth repairing? Age is not what ends one — parts availability is. A twenty-year-old cavity with a component still in production is an ordinary repair at ordinary money. The same fault on an appliance whose board has been discontinued is a different conversation, and we would rather have it at the diagnostic than after a week of waiting. ### How long does a Wolf oven last? Nobody here has measured it, and a single number quoted online is somebody's estimate rather than a manufacturer figure. What the trade generally observes is that the mechanical side — cavity, burners, hinges, doors — outlives the electronics by years. The board is usually what decides an appliance's second decade. ## Related - Why a built-in is a different calculation: https://jaxwolfco.com/kitchen-notes/when-a-built-in-is-worth-repairing/ - The full price book and terms: https://jaxwolfco.com/pricing/ - What Wolf equipment we work on: https://jaxwolfco.com/repairs/ --- Kindling Range Service is an independent appliance repair company.
