That is a lot of parts for one symptom to hide behind, which is why the diagnosis on these ovens is done in a fixed order rather than by guessing at the most likely component. ## The order we work through We run a full cycle and watch it, because a steam oven tells you most of what is wrong in the first two minutes if somebody is standing there. **Does the tank draw?** The reservoir latches into a coupling at the back, and a tank pushed in firmly but not seated is a very common false alarm. It costs nothing to check and it is the first thing we check. **Does the pump prime and run?** A pump that whines without moving water, or that runs briefly and gives up, sounds distinctly different from a healthy one under the same cycle. This is why we listen before we open anything. **Does the level sensing agree with reality?** A float or a probe that reports the wrong state will stop a cycle that has nothing else wrong with it. **Does the generator heat, and how fast?** Come-up time is the single most useful number on the machine, because it is the one thing that degrades gradually rather than failing outright. **Does the cavity drain and does the door seal?** Both are visible at the end of the same cycle, so they cost no extra time to establish. Only after that does anything come apart. Steam ovens are built in, and getting one out of a cabinet to reach the generator is a job in itself — trim screws, the weight of the unit coming forward on its own, and an electrical connection that has to be isolated before any of it starts. We would rather spend fifteen minutes proving where the fault is than an hour finding out we were wrong. ## Weak steam and long come-up If your oven used to reach steam in a few minutes and now takes noticeably longer, act on it early. Mineral deposits plate onto the hottest surface in the generator, and deposit is a poor conductor, so the element runs hotter and longer to move the same energy into the water — which makes it plate faster. The oven does not fail on a particular day. It gets slow, then slower, then a sensor sees a value it does not like and the cycle stops. Caught early, a correctly run descale — repeated if the water comes out cloudy — often recovers the appliance completely. Past a certain point it does not, and running more cycles mostly attacks the seals and the pump impeller instead. That is the point to have the generator opened rather than dosed again. We can usually tell which side of that line an oven is on from how it behaves in the first cycle we run. Use the descaling agent the manufacturer specifies. Vinegar is acidic enough to work and also acidic enough to shorten the life of the elastomers it sits against, and on an appliance of this cost that difference is worth the price of the proper product. ## "Full reservoir, oven says empty" Level sensing is done by a float or a probe, and both have their own failure mode. A float that has stuck on its guide reads empty regardless of what is in the tank. A conductivity probe reads the water rather than the level, so a film across the contacts confuses it in the opposite direction and the oven believes there is water when there is not. Before either of those, we check the tank seating and the coupling itself. The coupling has a seal and a small valve, and a tired one can let a tank sit perfectly while drawing nothing. ## Water in the cavity after a cycle A small amount of condensate is normal and should clear. A pool that stays is a drain problem — the drain path or the drain pump is restricted, or the cavity is not level. Ovens are set level at install; cabinets settle, and a built-in that has drifted a degree out will hold water at one corner. It is worth checking with a level before condemning a pump. ## Door seals Steam finds every gap. A seal that has hardened lets steam track up and out of the top of the door, and once that starts, the escaping steam works on the cabinetry above it. Discoloured or swelling trim above a steam oven is a sign worth acting on early, because the cabinet damage costs more than the gasket. Seals are also where the genuine part matters most. The gasket profile and its compression are what keep steam inside the cavity, and a near-enough seal that leaks slowly does its damage where nobody is looking. ## Parts and lead times Everything is ordered against the model and serial from the data plate, which on a wall-mounted steam oven is usually on the frame behind the door. Production details change during a model's run, so the serial decides which generator assembly, pump or seal kit is the right one. Photograph the plate rather than copying it out. The parts that fail often are stocked. A generator assembly or a control board is ordered in and takes longer, and you will have that timescale in writing before you agree to anything. ## What the visit looks like Flat $129 diagnostic, credited toward the repair, written estimate before any part is ordered, genuine OEM parts.
