Gas burners, electric oven, flat $129 diagnostic credited to the work, OEM parts fitted. Source: https://jaxwolfco.com/repairs/dual-fuel-range/ Updated: 2026-08-15 What owners describe: - Oven runs cold or overshoots the set temperature - One surface burner clicks but will not light - Burner lights, then drops out a few seconds later - Oven will not come out of a self-clean lockout - Display is dark but the burners still work - Convection fan runs but the oven never reaches temperature - Broiler glows on one side only - Oven door sits proud at the top and leaks heat A dual fuel range is two appliances that happen to share a chassis. The cooktop is gas, with a spark module, a set of igniters and flame sensing that all need to stay dry and clean. The oven underneath is electric, with heating elements, a convection fan and a temperature probe that report back to one control board. When something goes wrong the first useful question is which half of the machine is actually talking, because the two halves fail for completely different reasons and almost never at the same time. ## The oven side Electric oven faults come down to one of three things nine times out of ten. The temperature probe has drifted, an element has opened up, or the board is no longer closing the relay that feeds it. Those are quick to separate with a meter, and they are quick to separate in the right order. The probe is a resistance device. It reads a specific value at room temperature and a predictable value hot, and if it is wrong at 72 degrees in your kitchen it is going to be wrong at 375. A probe that has drifted high makes the oven think it is hotter than it is, so the oven runs cold — often twenty-five or thirty degrees cold — without ever throwing a fault code, because from the board's point of view nothing is wrong. Owners usually describe this as "everything takes longer now" long before they describe it as a failure. If your roasting times have quietly stretched over two years, that is the part to suspect. An element that has opened up is more obvious: it never glows, or it glows in a band and goes dark past a certain point. A bake element that has burnt through at one end will often still show continuity if you catch it cold, so we test it warm as well. The relay is the third case, and it is the one that gets misdiagnosed most. A board that switches the bake element but not the broil element is a board fault, not an element fault, and swapping the element wastes the part. ## The cooktop side The gas side is simpler and dirtier. A burner that clicks without lighting is usually a fouled igniter, a cap seated a few degrees off, or a port blocked with the residue of something that boiled over three months ago. Cleaning the cap and the port solves this more often than any part does. A burner that lights and then dies a second or two later is a flame sensing problem, not a gas supply problem. The range lights the burner, looks for proof that a flame exists, does not find it, and shuts the gas off exactly as it is designed to. Replacing a regulator will not fix that, and neither will turning the gas up. Clicking on all burners when only one is turned on points at the spark module or at moisture bridging across the igniters. In Jacksonville that second cause is real — a cooktop that gets wiped down with a wet cloth and then run in August humidity can click for ten minutes before it dries out. ## Simmer, broil and the door Two things owners notice about a good dual fuel range are the low simmer and the broiler, and both drift with age. A simmer that has crept up until the lowest setting is no longer gentle is usually an air shutter or an orifice issue rather than a valve. An infrared broiler that lights unevenly is generally a burner surface that has been sprayed with cleaner at some point. Door seals and hinges matter more than people expect. Self-clean runs the cavity extremely hot, and every cycle takes a little life out of the hinge springs and the gasket. A door that sits proud at the top corner is bleeding heat past the seal, which makes the oven run long, which makes the element cycle more, which shortens everything downstream. ## What the visit looks like We test before we quote. The $129 diagnostic covers the trip and the testing, and it comes off the repair if you go ahead. You get the fault in writing, along with the part number and the price, before anything is ordered. Parts are genuine OEM. That matters more on a range than on almost anything else in the kitchen, because the oven's calibration assumes the resistance curve of the original probe and the wattage of the original element. A generic element that draws slightly differently will hold a temperature — it just will not hold the temperature on the dial. --- Kindling Range Service is an independent appliance repair company.
